Introduction
Hamburg’s streets are bursting at the seams. With a booming population set to exceed two million, surface traffic gridlock threatens the city’s livability and climate goals. U Connects presents the U5 subway as Germany’s largest urban rail expansion—a 25 km fully automated, barrier-free line with 22 new stations designed to reclaim space from cars and catalyze a shift to public transit.
By linking major generators of trips—43,000 university students, 11,000 healthcare workers at the UKE, 30,000 jobs in City Nord, as well as sports and event arenas—the U5 will carry around 315,000 passengers daily on 100 percent green electricity. With trains every 90 seconds and seamlessly integrated interchanges, it promises to divert an estimated 30,000 car journeys from Hamburg’s roads each day, easing congestion and slashing transport emissions.
